What is the X / Twitter character counter?
This is a local pre-publish checker for an X post. It uses 280 visible characters as a common configuration to help tighten copy; X’s composer has weighted counting and URL-shortening rules, so it is the final publication check.
Visible characters versus X weighted counts
The tool counts Unicode grapheme clusters, marking 260–279 as close and 280 as the configured limit. X may weight URLs, some Unicode characters and account features differently, so this is not an X API or publishing-eligibility check.
Example
“New launch today 🚀 See the link” counts each visible character and treats the rocket as one. At 268 characters, shortening the opener leaves flexibility for a URL and final call to action.
How to use
- Enter post text, mentions, emoji and a link draft.
- Review the visible-character total and 280-character status.
- Copy the summary and complete the final check in X’s composer.
Frequently asked questions
Why can X show a different remaining count?
X may apply URL shortening and weighted-character rules. This tool deliberately uses a consistent visible-character count; confirm in X before posting.
Does it support long posts?
It shows the 280-character setting only and does not determine whether an account has long-post or paid features.
Do mentions and hashtags count?
Yes. All visible text placed in the input is included in the total.
