What does a character counter do?
A character counter helps check the length of social copy, form fields, advertising text and file names. It counts user-visible Unicode character groups, then separately reports characters without whitespace, words and lines so you can use the measure a platform requires.
Counting logic
The tool uses Unicode grapheme clusters for visible characters, so joined emoji are not split into their underlying code points. Whitespace and line breaks count in the full total but are excluded from the no-whitespace total.
Length example
For “Hello 世界 👩💻”, English, Chinese and a joined emoji are counted as readable characters. Adding a line break also updates the line total and full character total.
How to use
- Type or paste the text to inspect.
- Read visible characters, no-whitespace characters, words and lines live.
- Copy the statistics or clear the text to begin again.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters is an emoji?
A visible emoji, including joined family and skin-tone sequences, counts as one grapheme cluster.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
They count as visible characters, while the no-whitespace statistic removes spaces, tabs and line breaks.
How is this different from a word counter?
This tool prioritizes visible character length, while a word counter is better for article-oriented word and line measures.
