Calculate
What does engagement rate measure?
Engagement rate shows how often an audience takes action on content. Dividing combined likes, comments, shares and saves by followers helps compare account-level participation, while using impressions measures response after a post was actually displayed.
Formula and denominator
Total engagements = likes + comments + shares + saves. Engagement rate = total engagements ÷ followers × 100%, or total engagements ÷ impressions × 100%. Keep the denominator consistent when comparing results.
Worked creator example
A post with 100 likes, 20 comments, 10 shares and 5 saves has 135 total engagements. With 1,000 followers, its follower-based engagement rate is 13.5%. The impression-based rate may differ.
How to use
- Choose followers or impressions as the denominator.
- Enter likes, comments, shares, saves and the selected audience figure.
- Calculate the total and rate, then copy the result into your report.
Frequently asked questions
Which engagement rate denominator should I use?
Use followers for account-level comparisons. Use impressions when evaluating how efficiently a specific post converted real displays into interactions.
Is a higher engagement rate always better?
It signals more audience action, but comment quality, audience relevance, reach and business outcomes still matter.
Can likes, comments, shares or saves be zero?
Yes. Any engagement count may be zero, but the follower or impression denominator must be greater than zero.
