What does CPM tell you?

CPM, or cost per mille, is the price paid for one thousand ad impressions. It helps media buyers and creators compare the cost of reach across placements, audiences and sponsorships, but it does not measure clicks or conversions by itself.

Formula and logic

CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000. Budget = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000. Impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000.

Worked example

A campaign spending $250 for 100,000 impressions has a $2.50 CPM. At the same target CPM, a $500 budget would buy approximately 200,000 impressions.

How to use

  1. Choose whether you need CPM, campaign budget or impressions.
  2. Enter the two requested figures, keeping monetary values in one currency.
  3. Calculate the result and copy it into your media plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lower CPM always better?

It means impressions cost less, but audience quality, click-through rate and conversions still determine business value.

Which currency does the calculator use?

It is currency-neutral. Use one consistent currency and read the result in that same currency.

Are impressions the same as reach?

No. Impressions can count repeat views by one person, while reach normally counts unique people.
