Live word count
What does this word counter measure?
This live word counter measures the length of articles, social posts, applications and assignments. It separates words, visible characters with and without whitespace, and lines so you can use the metric required by each platform.
How counting works
The tool uses Unicode word boundaries and visible grapheme clusters. This keeps accented letters and joined emoji intact. Whitespace is included in the full character count and excluded from the no-spaces count.
Worked example
For “Hello 世界”, the counter identifies the English word and Chinese text while also counting the space and each visible character. New lines increase both the line count and the character count with spaces.
How to use
- Type or paste English, Chinese or mixed-language text into the box.
- Read the live word, character and line totals without submitting a form.
- Copy the statistics for later use or reset the box to start again.
Frequently asked questions
How are Chinese words counted?
The counter uses Unicode word boundaries rather than assuming every Chinese character is a separate word. The character totals remain available for character-based limits.
How are emoji counted?
A visible emoji, including joined family or skin-tone sequences, counts as one grapheme instead of several underlying code points.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
They count in the full character total. The no-spaces total excludes whitespace, while line breaks determine the line total.
